Frederic Francois Chopin was born on March 1, 1810, in the village of Zelazowa Wola, which at the time was part of the Duchy of Warsaw. Chopin, born Fryderyk Franciszek Szopin, was the child of father Mikolaj (Nicholas) Chopin and mother Tekla Justyna Krzyzanowska. Frederic, the second child, had three sisters, Ludwika, Izabela and Emilia. At the time, Frederic's father, a Polonized man of French origin, was employed as a French tutor at a manorhouse in Zelazowa Wola owned by Count Skarbek. Frederic's split heritage was even illustrated in his name. Fryderyk is of Polish decent, as he was born in Poland, and Franciszek (Francois), is certainly of the French origin.

Chopin later began a more formal musical education, but before that he was taught at home. Frederic recieved piano lessons from his mother at an extremely early age and showed "prodigous musical ability" (Schneider) while creating original pieces by the age of six. At the age of seven, Chopin began taking piano lessons from 61-year-old Wojciech (Adalbert) Zywny. Zywny taught Chopin the music of some of the greatest past composers, including Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. Although much of the music taught to Chopin had leaned towards the style of the Classical Period, Zywny looked for the creativity and individuality of Frederic, which tended to follow the emerging style of Romanticism. Chopins compositions were "Romantically expressive and emotional, yet defined by a purity derived from the Classical Period before him" (Schneider). Chopin received lessons from Zywny from 1816 until 1822, when Chopin's skills surpassed that of his teacher.

Already having composed two polonaises at the age of seven, Chopin became a popular performing entity in the aristocratic households of Warsaw. Chopin's first public appearance was made at the age of eight at a public charity concert. At only 11 years old, Chopin performed in front of the Russian tsar Alexander I, who was to open for the Parliment in Warsaw. Frederic attended the Warsaw Lyceum, where his father was a professor, from age 13 to 16. Having visited other regions of Poland, Chopin took an interest in the folk music of the Polish countryside. After composing numerous pieces of music including polonaises, mazurkas, etc., Frederic was enrolled by his parents in Warsaw Conservatory of Music in 1826, which was directed by composer Joseph Elsner. Elsner, who had previously training with Chopin, made the perfect mentor for young Frederic. "Elsner, as a Romantically inclined composer himself, realized that Chopin's individual imagination must never be checked by purely academic demands," (Britannica).

Frederic Chopin's musical career blossomed even more so with his debut in Vienna, Austria, in 1829. Frederic returned briefly to Warsaw to gather his belongings for a more permanent move after an inital trip to Berlin in 1828. His dedicated parents helped to raise the money to send Frederic to Vienna Chopin's success was locked after a performance at a second concert in Vienna. During Chopin's excursion to Vienna, he was made aware of a Polish revolt against Russian rule. Chopin's familiy actually forbode him to return to Poland for fear of his own safety.

After waiting about another year in Austria, Chopin's next move was to Paris, France. He made pitstops for concerts in both Munich and Stuttgart, Germans, and finally arrived in Paris in Autumn of 1831. In Paris, Chopin realized that he had found the perfect location to master his craft, as Paris was the center of the Romantic movement. After Poland had suffered defeat to Russia, there was a mass emigration of Polish refugees to France, called the Great Emigration. Soon afterwards Chopin established friendships with several famous musicians who were part of the Great Emigration including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Felix Mendelssohn, Vincenzo Bellini, and Auguste Franchomme. They were all proponents of the Romantic movement.

Once in Paris, Chopin initially had a bit of a rough start as a composer and performer. He found out that his "extreme delicacy at the keyboard was not to everyone's taste in larger concert spaces," (Britannica). Thus he decided to focus his performance effort to the various great houses of Paris. Some famous works at this time included two books of etudes and his famous "Fantasie-Impromptu" from 1831 to 1835.

Chopin has a few romantic excursions to no avail, but in 1836 he met the French novelist Aurore Dudevant, also known as George Sand. Sand fell in love with Frederic, and eventually they began a liaison in the summer of 1838. He moved later that year with his mistress and her children to the island of Majorca for the winter months. All was well until the summer months approached once again and Chopin became ill with a fate of tuberculosis. He was kicked out of his winter villa and forced to live in the small, remote village of Valldemosa, as he was not accepted anywhere else.

Unsuitable living conditions, the odd situation with his mistress and her children, "and the lack of a suitable concert piano hindered Chopin's artistic production and further weakened his precarious physical health," (Britannica). In urgency, George Sand prepared Frederic and rushed him to a physician in Marseille in 1839. Chopin recovered greatly in a short period of time. Spending relaxing summers in Nohant, the location of Sand's country house, and composing some of his best pieces, Frederic Chopin lived comfortably in some the happiest times of his life.

Family troubles involving Chopin and Sand grew larger after a period of time, and eventually in 1848, they separated permanently. Soon afterwards, Chopin made an appearance in England and Scotland. He performed, but his mental exhaustion and state of physical health prevented him from composing. Chopin's final concert was played in November of 1848 in London, where he dedicated his performance to Polish refugees. Frederic returned to Paris. In the following year, 1849, with increasing depression and deteriorated health due to tuberculosis, Frederic Francois Chopin passed away at the age of 39.
